A declaration to the material from one of the most refined Austrian artists (A temporary studio 2017 for „Austrian glass core“, 1. Venice glass week)
With 25-plus years of experience in glassmaking, in his current phase Roth is focused on the sculptural casting technique. But he also frequently draws on his classical education in glass‐cutting and engraving, which he developed to a high standard as a workshop manager of Glass at Lobmeyr in Vienna and teaching at the Glass School in Rheinbach (Germany).
To be able to bring your personal inner vision to an aesthetic and powerful creation in glass, it is indispensable to have the skills and knowledge to see how the material fits in. Roth uses strong combinations of shape, haptics and title to uncover the concealed message behind.
From the very first line drawn on a board to a massive, intringuishing, light catching glass sculpture it's a quiet a long termed process within model- and mold making, firing up, annealing and finally cold working! So blood sweat and tears is really not a phrase to describe what can happen during the 3-6 weeks it takes to create those things! So that's definitely the most intense part of my work
LEARN MORELet me say that's the freestyle part of my game, I play with glass! The message itself is the most important thing I want to spread throughout this kind of work. Throughout the years, I figured out how to use glass differently most people are able to look at. This line of my expression comes from the really inside and so even it's not “salable” work it's worth to continue!!
LEARN MOREMostly cold worked, more into design sometimes but always unique is what I call here objects. This is a different way of conversation I have with a blank piece of glass, asking for what the form, color and thickness tells me to work with. And quite often finally it's a bit based on my classical education as a glass cutter and engraver! So if you love smooth lines and reflecting patterns, maybe that's the way I can catch you!
